Program Overview

The BayCare Medical Group (BMG) Medical Assistant Academy is a short-term, intensive program designed specifically for those aiming to become Certified Medical Assistants. With a total length of 14 weeks, the training combines classroom education, practical simulation labs, and an externship to provide well-rounded, real-world experience. Classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, with an externship scheduled Monday through Friday for three weeks, totaling 120 hours.

Located at the BMG Concourse II training center (3503 E. Frontage Rd, Tampa, FL 33607), this program offers structured learning directly related to medical assisting duties. The curriculum covers vital signs, blood draws, vaccinations, ECG testing, electronic medical record management, and more.

Certification and Employment Opportunities

Upon completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion from BMG MA Academy and become eligible to take the Certified Medical Assistant (NHA-CCMA) exam administered by the National Healthcareer Association. This certification must be attempted within 90 days following the completion of the program.

Graduates demonstrating proficiency and adherence to BayCare values are typically offered a full-time medical assistant position within BayCare Medical Group. Entry-level positions for external hires start at $16.01 per hour, with competitive benefits packages available.


Admission Requirements

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 18 years old at program start
  • Computer skills relevant to the position
  • 500-word personal essay about their interest and potential success in the program

Preferred:

  • Two years of face-to-face customer service experience (any industry)

Additionally, accepted candidates must:

  • Successfully complete a background check and drug screening (approximate cost: $88)
  • Provide their transportation and stethoscope
  • Have access to a computer with internet connection
  • Wear appropriate attire: black scrub bottoms, closed-toed shoes

Costs and Payments

The total cost of the program is $1,500, payable by cashier’s check, covering textbooks, online learning resources, lab materials, two scrub tops, and the first certification exam attempt. Scholarships and federal financial aid are not available, but current BayCare employees can utilize tuition assistance (which excludes eligibility for sign-on bonuses).


Attendance and Commitment

Full attendance over the 14-week duration is mandatory, with exceptions limited to emergencies and holidays recognized by BayCare. Prospective students must be prepared to commit fully to the schedule provided.


Application Process

Applications are accepted year-round and reviewed periodically. Selected applicants undergo an in-person panel interview. Those selected receive notifications from the program coordinator about their acceptance.
